Psychotherapy
A hallmark of my work is assisting you in identifying repetitive patterns of emotional pain, including anxiety sadness, anger, guilt, worry, feelings of inadequacy, or hopelessness. As we identify your patterns, discover their origins and discern the internal dynamics that keep the patterns going, your conscious awareness increases, your insight to your patterns grows and you have an easing of emotional pain. These shifts, in combination with the realization of the unconscious sources of your distress, help you reorient internally such that choices you make and actions you take have greater utility and you find more pleasure in living. |
Consultation
At critical times, periods of transition or personal challenge, you may find it useful to discuss significant matters with someone outside of your circle of family and friends. The consultation I provide assists you in the clarification of important issues, identification of the approaches you may use to move forward and an analysis of the risks or possible consequences of the path you choose to follow. These matters may involve personal or professional concerns. As the consultation process unfolds, you may choose to continue meeting for support and continuing the discernment process as you move forward. |
Problem solving counseling
Even the most capable among us have times of challenge in which the resources typically drawn on for guidance are not adequate. With the focus on a specific issue I provide an environment of non-judgment, openness and curiosity directed to looking closely at a troubling situation with the aim of finding satisfying responses and peaceful resolution. |
Sessions are typically 45 or 60 minutes in length and occur as serves the need of the work we have agreed to do together.
Often sessions occur once or twice a week. In general I meet with you in person. Telephone consultations are also available.
My practice is located in downtown Ann Arbor, Michigan. I work with individuals 16 years of age and older, couples and family members.

About Barbara
I began working with individuals as a counselor in 1974, at The University of Michigan. I opened a private practice as a psychologist in 1989. My training in clinical psychology at The University of Michigan included several years of direct supervision by senior psychologists, social workers and psychiatrists. I have pursued an expansive course of post-graduate training and study.
The central theme of my inquiry involves the interrelationships between intellectual, emotional and spiritual development. Each of us integrates these aspects of self uniquely. I am intrigued by the particulars of the personal journey of integration.
